Commemorative places,political spaces: Virginia Indians,the Jamestown Quadricentennial,and the quest for sovereignty

ABSTRACT

This essay examines the cross-cultural communication strategies deployed by a coalition of indigenous tribes in Virginia to leverage the Quadricentennial commemoration of the founding at Jamestown in support of their sovereignty campaign. The tensions between Jamestown’s mythos as the “birthplace of democracy” and the natives’ historical and contemporary lived experiences, combined with the national and international attention focused on the events, constructed the 400th anniversary “celebrations” as a compelling location for social action. The coalition employed intercultural communicative practices—particularly cross-cultural dialogue and negotiation—as means of mobilizing these tensions to renegotiate their relationship with the federal government, illustrating the intersection of intercultural communication, memory, and identity.     

The Mitigating Effects of Intergroup Contact on Negative Stereotypes,Perceived Threats,and Harmful Discriminatory Behavior Toward Asian Americans

This study examined the ameliorating effects of intergroup contact with Asian Americans on negative stereotypes, perceived threats, and harmful discriminatory behaviors toward them. The results of multivariate regression analyses indicated that intergroup contact with Asian Americans adversely predicted negative stereotypes (i.e., excessive competence and deficient sociability), perceived realistic and symbolic threats, and active and passive harmful discriminatory behaviors toward them. The findings highlighted the utmost importance of intergroup contact in improving intergroup attitudes and behaviors.     

A Survey of Documentary Materials Available on U.S. Tribal Websites

This survey of official U.S. tribal websites examined sites for documentary materials of importance to each tribe that have been archived online, including such materials as historical essays, photos, videos, maps, newspapers, legal and historical documents, historical images, books, pamphlets, bibliographies, cultural and language materials. The materials found on those websites appear to be intended for the use of both tribal members and the general public. The result of the survey was to show that many of the same types of documentary materials held in tribal archives are also available on official websites, and to produce a current snapshot of the large array of tribal records which have been made openly available, although the length of time each document will be available on each site is unknown.     

Exploring Views about LARCs Among Parenting Rural Latinx Teenagers,Their Mothers,and Providers: Implications for Sexuality Education and Care

While long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) reduces risk of repeat-births, use remains low among rural Latinx adolescent mothers. This qualitative study identified perspectives about factors that influence LARC use among this population. Participants were dyads of parenting Latinx adolescent daughters and their mothers (n?=?9 dyads) and nurses (n?=?17). Findings revealed themes specific to this vulnerable population including (a) distinct ways LARC characteristics fit into parenting teenagers’ lives, (b) supportive health care climate toward LARCs, and (c) factors that inhibit LARC uptake. The study has implications for sexuality education that seeks to reduce repeat-births among this population.     

非裔美国人的身份探究——对托妮·莫里森《宠儿》的后殖民主义理论解读

从后殖民主义角度研究了莫里森的小说《宠儿》,莫里森通过对小说人物的塑造实现了对非裔美国人身份的探索,在对身份缺失根源的追寻和身份回归的探索中,逐渐形成了一种理想的身份状态,即身份的杂糅,这对于当代非裔美国人的生存与发展具有启示意义。     

Children's dependence upon visual context in sentence comprehension

This study explored the manner in which young children utilize meaning clues implicit in nonlinguistic aspects of context to aid comprehension of difficult sentences. Comprehension of reversible passive sentences was measured for the degree to which visual context could be helpful to sentence understanding. Results indicated a strong reliance on visual cues by children from three to seven years of age. The use of visual aids as a means of helping children develop comprehension strategies is suggested.     

College/University Counseling Centers Supporting Study Away: Challenges and Opportunities

Research points to significant numbers of students on college campuses experiencing mental health distress and an ever increasing number of college students who are choosing to make an off-campus educational experience a part of their college careers. When we consider both of these trends together, it is quite apparent that a significant number of students with mental health concerns will spend periods of time studying away from campus, with converging concerns among college mental health and study away professionals about how to best support these students. This article seeks to outline both challenges and opportunities inherent in the collaboration between campus professionals in supporting students with mental health issues before and during their study away experiences.

摘要：第65届美国运动医学年会精彩纷呈,吸引了来自全球70多个国家的6000余名运动科学、临床医学等领域的学者参会,中国大陆地区也有上百名学者参加会议。年会的两场主报告分别是“体力活动对癌症的预防与治疗：证据现状”和“体力活动行为改变和健康促进的历史与亮点”。与年会同时举办的第九届“运动是良医全球大会”和“肌肉肥大与萎缩基础科学全球大会”。年会亮点之一是全面解读了最新发布的2018年美国人体力活动指南专家咨询委员会（2018 Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee,2018PAGAC）科学报告。此是在2008PAGAC科学报告的基础上审读近10年运动科学领域中研究成果后完成的,将为美国联邦政府制定第2版体力活动指南提供依据。2018PAGAC科学报告提供了运动科学领域新的研究成果,梳理了静坐少动行为与疾病的关系,对今后运动科学的研究提出了一系列的建议。认真学习领会2018PAGAC科学报告将对我国科学健身领域的研究和成果应用提供有益借鉴。     

Fast-food Culture and Americans' Outlooks on Life

Fast-food is always the one of the main culture in America just like it has been known.It is not only very important in Americans’lives,but can reflect some of their outlooks on life.This thesis gives an analysis of reflection of Americans’outlooks on life in fast-food culture.Five types of Americans’outlooks on life have been surveyed:working hard and playing hard,optimism and open-mindedness,treating the time as the life,self-independence and believing the equality.Beginning with the introduction of the emergence and development of fast-food culture in America,the thesis brings why the fast-food can be popularized among Americans to light.Consequently,we can find that some of the Americans’outlooks on life can be consistent with their fast-food culture.This thesis will be divided into four parts.The first part is the introduction and the last conclusion.The focus of this thesis is laid on the two middle parts which first display the five types of Americans’outlooks on life,then give the analysis of the reflection in fast-food culture.This thesis attempts to explore the Americans’outlooks on life.Although by the thesis we can not learn about a nation completely,we still know some aspects of their outlooks on life from fast-food culture.Key words:outlook;Americans;fast-food;culture     

We Are All Teachers: A Collaborative Approach to Digital Collection Development

ABSTRACT

In libraries and archives, efforts to document underrepresented communities and diversify collections can be fraught with political tension. We explore an interdepartmental collaboration to create and preserve a digital collection documenting the Urban Native Relocation Program of the mid- to late-twentieth century in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Involving the Grand Valley State University Libraries, the Kutsche Office of Local History, and the university's Native American Advisory Board, the project serves as a model not just for collaborative collection development but also for community engagement and outreach. We find that process is as important as product in developing collaborative digital collections.
