Next Generation Cataloging

During the past several years the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) noted increasing concern from the library community regarding the future of cataloging. In response to this concern and to the rapidly changing metadata environment, OCLC is taking steps to further a paradigm shift toward early acquisition of metadata in WorldCat directly from the entities responsible for content purchased by libraries—chiefly the publisher supply chain. This shift in thinking requires the acknowledgement that metadata is dynamic and will change over time and relies upon the automated capture of metadata early in the publishing cycle as well as automated processes to help make the early metadata “good enough.”

An account of the process of constant experimentation that drives our industry-leading newsletters and web site; the lessons behind our entrepreneurial experiences that should be meaningful to many within book publishing; and suggestions for how publishers of all sizes can employ a similar mindset in getting closer to readers and leveraging their natural assets for success in today’s rapidly changing marketplace. This paper was presented during the “Making Information Pay 2008” conference organized by the Book Industry Study Group, as a different kind of text as far as I am concerned than an essay. What I actually said the day of the presentation was undoubtedly somewhat different than what is written here.

Library Standards and E-Resource Management: A Survey of Current Initiatives and Standards Efforts

The article “ONIX, Z and JWP: Library Standards in a Digital World,” which appears in volume 53, number 4 of The Serials Librarian, provides a detailed look at library standards and places them in the context of the e-journal lifecycle. The talk given at “Black Cats & Broken Links: Dispelling E-resource Superstitions,” Mississippi State University's Seventh Annual E-resource Workshop, was a presentation of that article. Rather than duplicate the details of the aforementioned article, this presentation write-up provides a brief overview of the topic.

The Electronic Cataloging in Publication Cataloging Partnership Program: A Model for Cooperative Cataloging for the Twenty-First Century

The Library of Congress’ Cataloging in Publication (CIP) Program has been in existence for forty years. During this time, the CIP Program has moved from a model where the Library of Congress created all pre-publication metadata for publishers to a partnership where other libraries share in the creation of metadata. This article documents the evolution of the Electronic Cataloging in Publication (ECIP) Cataloging Partnership Program. The ECIP Cataloging Partnership Program can be used as a model to leverage limited resources across libraries to the benefit of library users nationwide.     

Usage Factor for Journals: A New Measure for Scholarly Impact

This presentation described the history and ongoing development of EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) for libraries, agents, and publishers. The focus was on the newer international initiatives and developments, such as SUSHI (Standard Usage Statistical Harvesting Initiative), which can supply data directly to library Electronic Resource Management (ERM) systems. While the full promise of accurate machine-to-machine interchanges, which can enter data into our respective systems within seconds, is yet to be achieved, there is much work under way to develop and improve EDI protocols and standards.
