The Impact of More,Better, Faster,Cheaper: How the PCC Influenced Everything That Followed

Abstract

The beginnings and the early years of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) had a profound impact on the approach taken to cataloging in North America and around the world. The commitment to standards, cooperation, and expanded access also had an impact that went far beyond cataloging operations. One library dean traces the evolution of her vision and contemplates how the PCC’s principles have shaped her entire career and have affected the libraries in which she has worked.     

Library Space Redesign and Student Computing

Academic libraries are spending considerable time and study on redesigning spaces. The use of technology is often an important part of these redesigned spaces. The space redesign goals at F.D. Bluford Library focus on creating open, activity-promoting, colorful spaces that are designed to be attractive to students. The goals also focus on implementing hybrid spaces that allow students to work alone or in groups, with support for mobile technologies like laptops or tablets. The space redesign goals focus on upgrading the quality of desktops available but reducing the number of desktops. This study examines the question “Does our library renovation significantly change computer use in the redesigned area?” Key findings include that, in defiance of expectations, there is no significant decrease in desktop usage despite the decreased number of computers. However, findings show there is a significant difference in tablet use, despite tablet-friendly spaces and charging options. Surprisingly, our students use fewer tablets. Laptop usage shows no significant difference. In summary, our research shows desktop computing—especially high-quality desktop computing—appears to still have a role in academic libraries even in the mobile technology age.     

Digital redesign tracker for cascaded analog systems with state saturation and external loads

This paper presents a newly developed digital redesign control scheme with a weighted switching strategy and output-reference tracking, for a cascaded analog system with state saturation and external loads. The proposed method improves the generally poor transition response and output deviation caused by state-saturation constraint and external loads. It replaces an existing or theoretically well-designed analog controller with state saturation, by a digital controller with almost identical performance.     

Planning for Diversity:

The Auraria Library, a multi-institutional urban academic library in Denver, Colorado, approached the strategic planning process with the assumption that urban academic institutions and their libraries differ from their traditional counterparts. This paper defines urbanism and examines the organization values audit and the environmental scan as crucial elements of the strategic planning process in an urban context.     

From course assessment to redesign: a hybrid-vehicle course as a case illustration

Assessment has become a central aspect of engineering education for evaluating student learning, attaining accreditation, and ensuring accountability. However, the final step of the assessment process, which requires assessment results be used to redesign courses and programmes, is appreciably underdeveloped in the literature. As such, this work suggests a process, based on the engineering problem-solving method, to analyse and act on problems and successes identified in the assessment results. The process is illustrated through an application to Colorado State University's new programme for Hybrid-Electric Vehicle Engineering, for which the redesign process was originally created. Readers will benefit by simplifying and systematising the essential aspect of the assessment process – application to course redesign – for use in both research and practice applications.     

环保购物袋再设计研究

目的：研究环保购物袋的再设计方向。方法：以环保购物袋的使用现状和设计现状为切入点,分析不同种类的可持续性材料应用于环保购物袋设计的可行性。在此基础上,从用户研究的深入性、购物袋设计的可理解性、操作使用的易用性、情感化设计4个方面,分析环保购物袋再设计的设计方向。结论：再设计后环保购物袋能够给用户带来更好的审美价值、情感体验、消费体验、使用体验等,以此为基点可以改变消费者的生活方式和消费观念,引导消费者共同参与环保行动。     

Measuring development of environmental awareness and moral reasoning: A case-study of a civil engineering course

ABSTRACT

Environmental awareness and ethical moral reasoning are important aspects of the engineering profession. Yet, engineering programmes have been struggling to teach these topics and measure the effectiveness of these educational interventions. In this study, we tested the effectiveness of two independent measures of environmental awareness and moral reasoning. We conducted pre-and post-test in two groups (experimental and control). Our sample was 84 students in the control group and 152 students in the experimental group. Data were collected with a survey. Results suggest the instruments were effective in measuring changes in scores, although they presented some limitations. Based on our results, we discuss implications for education practice and policy.

阳煤HY机电公司绩效考核体系再设计

本文通过对阳煤HY机电公司现有绩效考核情况的调查,运用现代绩效管理的相关理论知识,剖析了现行考核体系存在的问题。采用定量分析与定性分析相结合的方法,运用科学的管理方法和管理工具,通过工作分析、工作评价及绩效考核指标的设计,并结合企业的实际情况,对原有绩效考核体系进行了再设计,解决了原有考核体系中存在的问题。
