Basic skill requirements for selected Army occupational training courses

This study investigated the basic cognitive skills soldiers must possess before entering the Army, skills that are needed for successful completion of entry-level training. Judgments of 126 instructors from 25 military occupational specialties were obtained on 129 candidate skills, which resulted in the identification of 55 basic skills. Factor analysis of these 55 skill items resulted in 11 interpretable factors. Mean scores on the factors were compared across factors and across Army training schools. The results of the study suggest that, for all occupational specialties studied, skills related to the learning process are as crucial as traditional academic skills for successful training course completion. These results have important implications for training for the Army as well as for industry.

推进城镇化、降低房价与房地产去库存——对我国35个大中城市的经验分析

推进城镇化和降低房价被认为是当前我国房地产去库存的主要措施.利用2001-2013年35个大中城市的数据实证检验推进城镇化和降低房价对房地产去库存的影响,结果表明:从整体上来讲,推进城镇化和降低房价确实能够有效消化当前我国过剩的房地产库存;但也表现出明显的地区差异,东部地区推进城镇化的作用明显但降低房价的作用有限,中西部地区降低房价的作用显著而推进城镇化的作用有限;此外,提高人均收入对房地产去库存也具有积极影响,而地方财政收入越高、人口密度越大的地区房地产去库存的压力越大.因此,房地产去库存应因地制宜,要根据各城市的房地产市场情况制定切实可行的政策,实现精准调控.     

Making it happen: Possibilities and pitfalls of Cunningham's educational semiotic

In fundamental agreement with Cunningham's overall thesis, we attempt in this paper to articulate what an educational semiotic might look like on a practical level. For educational psychologists, it should mean an increased awareness of the limited, localized world views offered by current models of cognition and an increased attentiveness to alternate models. For teachers, an educational semiotic offers integration of cognition and affect and instructional strategies that depend upon and facilitate many ways of knowing. For an educational semiotic to be realized, however, there must be much greater attention paid to the roles of motivation and metacognition in semiotic pedagogy.     

AN INVESTIGATION OF CRITICAL MASS: The Role of Latino Representation in the Success of Urban Community College Students

The community college has historically functioned as a primary access point to postsecondary education for Latino students. This study, an investigation conducted through an analysis of the Transfer and Retention of Urban Community College Students (TRUCCS) project, focuses on Latino students enrolled in urban “minority-majority” community colleges, where Latino students have a high representation. The specific interest of this research is the role and effect of the level of representation of Latino community college students on their academic outcomes. The relationship between the level of representation of Latinos, and the levels of academic success are analyzed in concert with other variables, such as, the level of representation of Latino faculty on campus, student age, attitude, academic integration, English ability and aspiration. Findings indicate a relationship between academic success of Latino community college students and the proportion of Latino students and faculty on campus. The findings thus suggest that a critical mass of Latinos may be a positive influence encouraging “minority” students to higher academic performance.
