The author reports on a visit to Athens, Greece, in September 2006 to visit book dealers, libraries, archives, and other institutions with which the Library of Congress has relations, for acquisitions and for collaborative projects in the areas of bibliographic control, microfilming, and digital projects.     

Here Today,Gone Tomorrow: The Vicissitudes of Vendor/Library Relations in the Slavic and East European Book Trade

ABSTRACT

This paper discusses the transformations in the Slavic and East European book trade in the 1990s. Among the challenges these changes pose to Slavic librarians are a profusion of new vendors, very small print runs, and a general breakdown in bibliographic control throughout the region. It argues that vigilant and timely selection is critical in order to obtain materials before they go out of print. Cultivating direct relationships with vendors both in North America and in the region is also required in order to continue to build Slavic collections successfully. It also considers the performance of English language approval plan vendors, electronic vs. print, and the ominous implications that the trend toward mergers and economies of scale hold for library collections.     

Cataloging E-Books: Dealing with Vendors and Various Other Problems

E-books are an important part of library collections. Allowing patrons to easily find e-books in a library’s online catalog requires properly cataloging these materials. Miao Jin, Catalog Librarian at Hinds Community College, gave a presentation titled “Cataloging e-Books: Dealing with Vendors and Various Other Problems” at the Mississippi State University Libraries’ eResource & Emerging Technologies Summit held in the Mitchell Memorial Library on August 2, 2013. Jin provided information on cataloging her library’s e-books and adding them to the library’s online catalog. She presented strategies for loading e-book machine-readable cataloging (MARC) records, and shared her experience working with vendors.

广州流动摊贩治理的进展、挑战及完善

在新型城市化建设的背景下,广州对流动摊贩的转型治理进行全新探索,致力于构建新型治理模式,但仍存在疏导点选址欠科学、摊位租金收费非制度化、网上服务系统难覆盖、政策宣传不足等问题,从而引发了流动摊贩的不信任感和不公平感,降低了对新型治理模式的认可度与接纳度。由此,在坚持规范化、人性化的治理理念和制度内福利设计原则的基础上,重塑政府与社会的关系,建立流动摊贩新型治理长效机制势在必行。     

The Cooperative We Need: Open and Collaborative Library Content

This article highlights the need for database collaboration among OCLC and librarians in order to create the cooperative database that the entire library community needs to move ahead in the future. The author critiques recent OCLC strategic directions and suggests that the Dublin giant needs to focus essentially on its cooperative nonprofit roots to best serve the library community and library users in the years ahead.     

"Where Does the Money Go?"

After spending decades automating libraries with proprietary software solutions, the author decided the business model is flawed, resulting in libraries stagnating at a time they should be accelerating. A possible solution exists in open source software solutions and the author outlines the reasons for the explosion of open source software and his move to support the development. The article examines the advantages, disadvantages and misconceptions that exist about open source software and concludes with a call for libraries to examine and form their own conclusions on this exciting new option that is available to their organizations.
