清代历任直隶总督对保定莲池书院的发展有着重要的作用,历任直隶总督与莲池书院的院长之间都有着千丝万缕的联系;在莲池书院的发展过程中,图书建设、学院经费、课程管理、考课、讲学等多方面,直隶总督都起着特殊的作用。曾国藩、李鸿章、袁世凯在任职期内对书院在嬗变中所做的调整及改革的努力尤为突出。政府与社会的合力是莲池书院兴盛与转型结局的决定因素。

Governors of zhili during Qing Dynasty played an important role for the development of Lianchi Academy of Baoding.Each governor has closely related with the president of Lianchi Academy.During the development of Lianchi Academy,governors of zhili palyed a special role in the construction of library,academy funds,course management,examination and lecturing and so on.ZENG Guo-fan,Li Hong-zhang and YUAN Shi-kai have contributed a lot to the adjustment and reform of this academy.The cooperation of government and society is the key factor why Lianchi Academy can reform successfully and become prosperous.
