《早春二月》问世之初，即受到左倾思潮的批判和否定。批判者认为影片同情并肯定了“资产阶级的自我完善和人道主义”精神，是一株“毒草”。新时期以来，对《早春二月》的正面价值的认定，则又主要集中在认为它批判了“资产阶级的人道主义和个性主义”思想上。被颠倒的历史就这样被简单地再颠倒过来。今天看来，这样截然相反的两种评价，都不符合影片的实际，都简化了它所描绘的“五四”时期初生的现代思想遭遇前现代社会的复杂图景，忽视了它所揭示的“五四”反负面思想传统及其艰巨性这一重要主题，对“五四”知识分子的人道主义和个人主义的思想价值及其局限也缺乏全面准确的认知。
