Abstract:Based on personal experience in South Africa (1984–1985), this paper broadly outlines and discusses the intercultural dimension of the South African dilemma. The intercultural communication needs are viewed as fundamental for the promotion and sustaining of positive structural changes that will emerge post-Apartheid. By reviewing events in South Africa and summarizing a recent South African study emphasizing the intercultural needs, the paper posits a readiness for addressing the issue and asserts that intercultural communicators do not have the option of “disinvesting” in South Africa. The paper briefly reviews two programs in South Africa addressing the intercultural needs agenda.
