Abstract:The chronic trematode infection schistosomiasis (bilharziasis) depends for its transmission on a snail intermediate host. It is widespread in tropical and sub-tropical areas, where attempts to control it are a major charge on public health services. Between 1966 and 1981 a carefully planned and monitored campaign was carried out in St Lucia to compare the effects of the three principal control methods — snail control, chemotherapy, and improved water supply.
