The sequence of events in much electronic publishing is to transform material prepared for publication in print into an electronic product post hoc. This paper describes the editorial thinking and planning behind the preparation of the New Dictionary of National Biography for publication in print and electronic form, in particular the issues arising from the attempt to capture ‘clean’ information from literary prose.
