Higher education as a research field or as a discipline, different people hold different views. This paper states that if we want to know higher education can be defined as a or not we should based on the criterion of disciplinary institutionalization and historic experience. According to whichever name it is, research field or discipline, we can come to a conclusion that from a worldwide view, higher education has been on its way to establishing disciplinary institutionalization.
