Abstract:This talk concerns about the efforts made in the period of the Renaissance in early modern Europe(from roughly 1350 to 1700) to understand a treatise of Aristotle's known to us today as The Art of Rhetoric. It focuses on the difficulties that European commentators had in making sense of Aristotle's Rhetoric, and some of the unexpected controversies in which these scholars engaged, and tries to explain why these controversies arose. The author thinks that these efforts are particularly important for both here in China and in the United States for what they suggest about what happens when we try to take a treatise that was written in one culture, and try to understand that treatise within the needs and interests of another culture. The explanation has broader implications for us today in our modern world-both here in China and in the countries of the "West"-as we try to make sense of theories of rhetoric and communication that are developed in one culture, and which are then transferred to another culture. Finally, the author points out that many people in the European Renaissance thought that rhetoric and society were pretty much the same thing. It was rhetoric that made it possible for men to avoid violence and transcend their nature as beasts. It was rhetoric that could lead the thoughts of many different men and blend those differences into a social harmony that embraced all contradictions. It was rhetoric that made us civilized.
Keywords:the Renaissance   the Art of Rhetoric   Controversies   Crossing Cultures   Aristotle
