Abstract: | A theatre critic for the New York Evening Post during a period of significant change in the Ameircan theatre, John Ranken Towse witnessed the decline of the repertory stock company and its replacement by the single play and long rum He viewed the formation of the Theatrical Syndicate and its monopoly of the professional stage. Dissatisfied with these changes, Towse offered various proposals for establishing a more artistic theatre in the country. This essay reviews his arguments for reform. |
