| Abstract: | Hedging is a universal phenomenon in all languages. This paper seeks to address the various categorizations of hedges and their pragmatic functions within the framework of Conversational Implication, Cooperative principle, and Politeness principle. Their relationships with social status, gender and profession of interlocutors are also investigated. |
