The Feminine Knot in Cat's Eye

Relationships between women are often more daedal and tangled than one might think.Even childhood experiences will exert significant impact on their adult life and sentiments.In a tradition whose decision-makers are overwhelmingly males,women,superficially at least,follow men in their values and tastes.Realistically,however,their status in their own world means much more to them.This essay tries to prove the above view by analyzing the delicate and many-fold modes of behavior and emotions of Elaine Risley,the protagonist in Cat＇s Eye,one of Margaret Atwood＇s representative fictions,and concludes that the ＂feminine knot＂ rather than the ＂childhood complex＂ or nostalgia or misogyny is the most justifiable interpretation of Elaine＇s behavior and psychology.
