20世纪上半叶，长江三角洲主要粮食作物水稻、三麦和主要经济作物棉花、油菜的亩均产量均趋于减少。与清代中叶相比，长江三角洲主要农作物的单位面积产量也趋于下降。即使在长江三角洲农业生产力最高的20—30年代，农业生产仍未恢复到19世纪中叶太平天国战前的水平。
