| Abstract: | With 1km × 1km grid for the basic unit ,the evaluation factors such as the traffic network in-dex ,waters index ,school services index ,living influence index and land surface index are chosen . Based on GIS setting up Chuzhou city human settlements environment index （HEI） model ,the natural environment suitability of human settlements and the spatial regularity are evaluated .The results show that ：Chuzhou city human settlements environment index decreases from center to edge ,w hich reflects population density is significantly correlated with population density at grid size and the R 2 value for them amounts to 0 .8361 .Chuzhou city residential environment suitability assessment showed that Chuzhou city＇s general appropriate area is above 132km2 ,close to 2 .96% of the city area ,the corre-sponding population accounts to 8 .75% of it ,and 3 .3% of the population gathered in highly and rela-tively suitable human settlements environment . T he critical suitable region covering the area of 698 km2 ,accounts for 15 .69% of the city ,and there are 39 .33 million people live in this region ,accounts for 24 .21% of the city .555 people per square kilometers is the Chuzhou residential environment appro-priate or not by the transition region .T here are 3619km2 of the non -suitable region in Chuzhou city with the 108 .91 million population ,accounting for the city area by 81 .35% ,population density for 303 people/km2 ,below the city average level of 365 people/km2 . |
