During the same period the rate of Afro - Americans and Hispanics in New York City's population has risen sharply. Like other cities of the U. S. , New York City has entered a new era of suburbanization and metropolitanization. Under the impact of such factors, the original economic role of New York City has diminished. However, it has made timely strategic adjustments in its industrial structure, and thus realized its second economic boom.
