Abstract:Despite the imagery or real"facts", narration is in a sense meaningful with a beginning, development and ending.According to the understanding of character's duty and responsibility, narration in the form of telling stories may be divided into two types : one in worldly perspective, the other in transcendental perspective.Ancient Chinese novels belong to the former,in which the narrative consciousness is gradually formed with the combination of naturalistic view and the Buddhist ideas at that time. This kind of cause-effect narration is a simplified and conceptualized way of understanding the real world and people's inner world, and also a way of avoiding the responsibility concerning writing.
Keywords:ancient novel   narrative consciousness   cause-effect retribution   responsibility
