The ethos of academic profession is the essence of academic profession.It characterises the innate needs and lofty calling of scholarship as a life and as a vocation.Searching for the genetic trace of academic profession needs to study its genesis and analyses its first cell.This study traces back from the origin of medieval university,along the key phases of monastery,scholasticism,institutionalisation of science,and down to social responsibility of scholarship.The themes explore in this process involving quiescence and solitude,doubt and criticism,freedom and passion,scholarship and responsibility.
