The Provenance of Archives Under Library Administration |
| |
Abstract: | Archives are frequently located administratively and physically in libraries. Based on the assumption that environment influences development the symbiotic relationship between libraries and archives is explored. Realities observed include: (1) the relationship is unequal with the library normally as parent, having greater resources a larger constituency, and more public visibility; and (2) administrative linkage is justifiable, but differences are substantial enough to produce numerous tensions. Placement of an archives in a library affects both. The necessity of organizational cohabitation does not obliterate the distinctiveness of each from the other. |
