The Provenance of Archives Under Library Administration

Archives are frequently located administratively and physically in libraries. Based on the assumption that environment influences development the symbiotic relationship between libraries and archives is explored. Realities observed include: (1) the relationship is unequal with the library normally as parent, having greater resources a larger constituency, and more public visibility; and (2) administrative linkage is justifiable, but differences are substantial enough to produce numerous tensions. Placement of an archives in a library affects both. The necessity of organizational cohabitation does not obliterate the distinctiveness of each from the other.
