Abstract: | The title of this volume suggests that academic and research libraries should adopt a more "user-centered" approach in response to environmental trends and proposes a need for organizational change to arrive at a user-centered state. Other papers in the volume address specific trends and the responses—current or envisioned—of the library in an institution of higher education. This paper addresses the role of professional associations in the process of organizational change. It accepts as a given the assertion that organizational change is necessary and that user-centeredness is a desirable characteristic of libraries, of higher education institutions, and of associations. |
