Abstract: | This essay explores new forms of publication that are gaining wider and wider use within scholarly communities across a range of disciplines. The most important of these include: on‐line journals; publication (of a sort) within listservs or other on‐line discussion groups; self‐publishing. Each of these can take a variety of forms. My primary concern here is with how these new forms of publication are influencing the kinds of scholarship that are taking shape in on‐line contexts and how these new types of scholarship, in turn, raise new questions about credibility, authorship and intellectual ownership and the criteria used for academic evaluation. |
