Returning to Realism: A Type of Decoding Lolita

For several decades, the interpretations of Vladimir Nabokov' s masterpiece Lolita have been concentrated on its post - modernity. Meanwhile, some critics have pointed out its allusion to and its satire on the modern American society, but this has seldom aroused public concern and interest. Starting with an exploration of the text itself and the writer' s experience, this essay argues that the novel satirizes and exposes sharply and extensively the vulgarities of the contemporary American scene, esp. those of the following: the motel, the school and family education, and mass consumer culture in modern society. And in these caricatures lie its important value and meaning.
