Liang Tingnan was a famous scholar of Guangdong in the late Qing period.His academic pursuits covered drama,history,and politics.He was engaged for a long period of time in school education in Guangdong and participated in the making of the gazetteer of Canton Customs House and activities against British invasion.He was one of the earliest Chinese to make contact with western culture and study international situations.He was a progressive intellectual who opened his eyes to the world but he was prevented from in-depth study of the west by his Confucian tunnel vision and the limitation of his social class and times.
