Abstract: | AbstractThe changes produced through heat treatment in the metallurgical structures of various types of cast and wrought iron were determined. The iron samples were from artifacts recovered from shipwrecks of the seventeenth and early nineteenth century. The heating cycles used in this study were similar to those currently employed in the thermal stabilization of iron recovered from the sea. From this work it is shown that the original metallurgical structures can generally only be preserved through thermal stabilization if the maximum treatment temperature does not exceed 400°C. |
