| 摘 要： | 菲茨杰拉德的两部长篇小说代表作<了不起的盖茨比>和<夜色温柔>集中体现了他的创作中心主题"注定要破灭的美国梦".两部小说的主人公盖茨比和迪克都是悲剧性的人物,其悲剧的实质是理想主义陷入道德堕落,物欲横流的现实世界的矛盾,他们的理想破灭和个人失败是"美国梦"破灭的戏剧化表现.

| Abstract: | Fitzgerald's novels"The Great Gatsby"and"Tender is the Night"best represent the theme"The American Dream is doomed to failure.After a brief comparison between these two novels,this thesis aims to point out that Gatsby and Dick are two tragic heros.Their tragedy comes from the confrontation between idealism and reality in which lust and deterioration replace purity and virtue.The failure of Gatsby and Dick is the dramatic representation of the failure of the American Dream.The use of symbol in these two novels is very effective for the expression of the theme. |
