19世纪后半期,中国面临着严重的社会和文化危机,弊端丛生的传统史学已满足不了时代的需要。此时,梁启超等一些学术大家遂应时而起,批判旧史学,构建新史学,发起了＂新史学＂运动。此后,中国史学在经历了艰难痛苦的转型后开始挑起了救亡图存的重任。因此,＂新史学＂在中国社会和史学发展历史上都有着重要的理论和现实意义,也为后来马克思主义史学思想在中国的立足和发展提供了有利的条件。但＂新史学＂运动中一些人对唯物史观的偏见和过分＂疑古＂的做法也使它本身带有较大的局限性。
