The frequent occurrences of natural disasters, famines and poverty aggravated all kinds of social contradictions in modern China. Sun Vat-sen believed overthrowing feudalism and western imperialism and founding a good government were the basic way to cope with famines. He also suggested some concrete measures like developing industry and transportation and innovating technologies under the guidance of the government. His idea of social relief and his practice of it reflected his great vision and sense of responsibility as a forerunner of the Chinese democratic revolution.
