《大地》中的阿兰与《母亲》中“母亲”形象之比较

1938年,诺贝尔文学奖评委会认为赛珍珠的《大地》三部曲及《母亲》等一系列描写中国的杰出作品"使人类的同情心跨越了种族的鸿沟","为西方世界打开一条以更深的人性洞察力去观察一个陌生而遥远的另一世界的道路"并且"符合阿尔弗雷德·诺贝尔对未来的期望"①而授予她诺贝尔文学奖。作为赛珍珠描述中国农村题材的代表作,这两部作品不仅表现了中国农村妇女共有的特征:善良、坚强、勤劳、勇敢,而且塑造了两种具有不同性格特征的中国农村妇女形象。我们将1931年出版的《大地》与1934年出版的《母亲》作比较,不难发现《大地》中阿兰表现出一种介于现实主义和理想主义间的沉默,《母亲》中的"母亲"则表现出一种理想主义的反抗精神。无论是沉默的阿兰还是勇于抗争的"母亲"都真实再现了当时中国农村妇女的生存现状,都展现了中国女性无穷的魅力。

Image Comparison of Alan in House of Earth and "Mother" Figure in The Mother

In 1938, the Nobel Prize committee awarded Pearl S. Buck the Nobel Prize for literature. It is acknowledged that her masterpieces such as House of Earth, The Mother and a series of works describing China not only ＂enable human sympathy to stride across the racial divide＂, but also ＂for the west to open a deeper insight into human nature to observe an unfamiliar and remote road to the other world＂ and ＂conform to Alfred Nobel, the expectations of the future＂. As Pearl S. Buck＇ s masterpieces describing the Chinese countryside, these two works have not only displayed the kind, hardworking and brave personalities which all Chinese rural women maintain but also mold two kinds of different Chinese rural women＇ s image from different angles. This paper compares House of Earth published in 1931 and The Mother published in 1934. It is not difficult to find that Alan in House of Earth represents resignation wandering between realism and the ideal- ism, while the ＂mother＂ in The Mother displays an idealistic resistance. Both the endurable Alan and the re- sistible mother manifest the Chinese rural womeng survival situation and their infinite charm.
