Character Archetypes in The Mayor of Casterbridge

According to the archetypal theories of many archetypal critics, the mimicking and reproducing of the similar characters in the former literary works would arouse readers' eeling to connect the characters with their archetypal ones, therefore to understand the work better. In The Mayor of Casterbridge, Thomas Hardy applies archetypal characters--Henchard as Cain; "Mr" Fall, the furmity woman, and Joshua Jopp as Erinyes, to support and set off one of the motifs of the novel, the tenet of Hardy as well: Man should be benevolent actively and never commit a sin; fall must be avenged sooner or later, by the force of nemesis, the just and unavoidable punishment.
