| Abstract: | Around 1950 the widespread raising of the school-leaving age in the developed countries gave an enormous boost to secondary and technical education. As the developing nations strove for mass literacy the demand for language training proliferated. These pressures gave rise to a much increased market for the teaching of written native tongues, official national languages, and the languages of international communication. |
