An Analysis of the Images of Intellectuals in Hawthorne's Fictions from the Angle of Western Culture

In western literature,the images of the intellectuals have two cultural sources:the mythology and religion.Intellectuals were usually regarded as a representation of rationality and knowledge.However,this traditional view was overturned and surpassed by Hawthorne,a 19th century American novelist,who depicted a series of intellectuals against the background of industrializing New England as irrational scientists,crazy avengers,feeble saviors.By doing so,he unscrambled the spirit of western culture from the perspective of modernity.
