Existential Paradox in the Discourse of Power in Human Stain

As the last novel of "American Trilogy" completed on the threshold of the 21st century,Human Stain depicts the vain attempt and frustration of a modern Oedipus who wants to break away from his ethnic fate.This paper focuses on the political and cultural background emphasizing the power discourse and public morality and explores the existential paradox of individuals from the perspectives of identity and moral judgment.It argues that contemporary society is permeated with the power discourse and people's unability of self defining.It not only exposes the repression of public moral discourse on human nature,but also explores the individuals' response and resistance to the power discourse when pursuing freedom.
