On Cultural Difference and Cultural Interpretation of Words

Among all the factors of a language, vocabulary is the most important carrier of cultural information and reflects faithfully the social life of the people who speak that language. Due to variety of differences in world outlooks, cultural backgrounds, value ideas, psychological factors and idioms, some quite commonly used words have different cultural meanings in their contexts. Therefore, different cultural backgrounds should be introduced into the teaching of vocabulary, and the teacher should trace back the origin of a word, interpreting it in the context, analyze its metaphorical meaning, show its cultural restriction, in order to learn and use the word more properly in its deeper meaning.
