City and Intellectual--On the Examination of Chinese Modern Novels

In the period of May 4th Movement, the writers then paid much attention to the intellectual's thought state. Their thoughts were opposite to that of the society, which made it quite difficult to match the early city culture. In the 1930s, as the Chinese city state became mature the intellectual actively took part in city activities such as occupations, life and culture. After the anti-Japanese war, with the rising of the worker-peasant's culture, whether in ideal or reality the intellectual alienated cities and entered into the countryside.
