A Survey of Characterization of Satan and God In Book 1,Paradise Lost

Paradise Lost is a great epic poem written by John Milton,the greatest English poet in the 17th century.It consists of 12 books,recounting a biblical story of Genesis.Book 1 puts on a vivid display of Satan’s fall into Hell and his initial attempts to rebel against God by allying with a legion of fallen angels.As far as the characters from different backgrounds are concerned,Milton deals with them in totally distinct manners.The present investigation argues that the characterization of Satan and God in Book 1 is successful in that it renders multiple perspectives of viewing them.Though having recourse to a literary text analysis,this study aims to illuminate the various viewpoints,from which better interpretations could be acquired.
