Abstract: | The laws of the development of all writing systems are that they proceed from pictographic to ideographic to phonetic systems. Chinese character writing has remained essentially at the ideographic stage for several thousand years, and there are definite reasons for it. Our primary responsibility in studying the history of Chinese writing is to explain those reasons correctly. |
