1 The Present State of Chinese Linguistics and its Problems

The achievements in Chinese philology are outstanding, but linguistics (the science of language) is still in its youth. Chinese have known about the science of linguistics for just over fifty years. In the world as a whole, linguistics is a junior member among the sciences. As for Chinese linguistics, it is seventy or eighty years behind European linguistics.
