The Timeliness of Tradition

Since World War II research in natural science and technology in the industrial countries has been conducted in a climate of increasing uncertainty concerning its function within the human community. The traditional, historically evolved faith in science has not been able to turn a deaf ear to the criticism that has been leveled against the consequences of its activity, which in some cases has ended up in extreme scientific skepticism. This criticism did not emerge within science's own ranks, but was formulated first by outsiders.
