增强语是增强语义的词语。它从假定的标准出发，在程度上逐步增强语气。因为增强语是一个比假定的标准更强的词语，因此，它要求被修饰的词项或单位是可分等级的。增强语分为最高程度语（表示语义递差度的上限）和提高程度语（表示一种很高的程度，即在语义递差上很高的一点）。许多可作增强语的形容词对它们所修饰的名词是严加限制的，起增强语作用的副词只能和可分等级的动词连用，而有些则只能和某些动词连用。

Amplifiers are the sort of words that have a heightening effect on the word they modify. They scale upwards from an assumed norm. Such scaling requires that the item or unit to which they apply is gradable. They are divided into MAXIMIZERS, which can denote the upper extreme of the scale, and BOOSTERS, which denote a high degree on the scale. But we must note that many adjectives, which can be used as amplifiers, have severe restrictions on the nouns they modify. Adverbs, which can be used as amplifiers, cooccur only with gradable verbs, and certain amplifiers tend to cooccur predominantly with certain verbs
