Institution: | Helen Lefkowitz Horowitz is the Sydenham Clark Parsons Professor of History and American Studies at Smith College. She is the author of numerous books, including Rereading Sex: Battles Over Sexual Knowledge and Suppression in Nineteenth-Century America;(2002), Campus Life: Undergraduate Cultures from the End of the Eighteenth Century to the Present (1987), and Alma Mater: Design and Experience in the Women's Colleges from their Nineteenth-Century Beginnings to the 1930s (1984). She is currently beginning work on the mind/body problem in the nineteenth century and its relationship to understandings of women's intellect, illness, and fitness for higher education. |
