The Direct and Indirect Effect of Family Factors on the Choice of a College Major

Research on Russian students shows that the choice of a major and career is strongly influenced by family characteristics, and that there are both direct and indirect influences. It is not clear, however, how much of the effect is due to differences in material resources and how much to social and cultural factors.
