| Abstract: | Shakespeare often modulates from verse to prose or vice verse in his plays so as to serve different purposes and achieve various dramatic effects. The subject of his alternation of expressive forms is both complex and fascinating. For centuries, critics have been writing on the themes, plots, vocabulary and poetic language of Shakespeare's plays, neglecting his use of prose in them. This essay, therefore, makes a tentative analysis of prose in Shakespeare's plays. |
