The Application of Schema Theory in Listening Comprehension of English News

In listening comprehension of English news,the listener not only distinguishes acoustic signals,but also forecasts and synthesizes the listening materials by using schemata in his mind.The academic circle has made enough exploration about the history and concept of schema theory and its three forms: linguistic schemata,formal schemata,and content schemata,but seldom mentioned how its two ways of functioning: data-driven process and concept-driven process should be applied in listening comprehension of English news.To improve their ability in listening comprehension of English news,the listeners should not only know of linguistic schemata about news reports,mostly the characteristics of words and sentence patterns,but also understand formal schemata,mostly features of discourse structure,and content schemata,mostly background information of the news.
