Discovery and Further Analysis of the Circular Order Made by the Prefecture of Huizhou to Gelao Society

Among a vast accumulation of Huizhou charts, the two authors have discovered a sheet of circular order made by the prefecture of Huizhou to Gelao Society in the 2nd year of Guangxu's Reign, in which the origin of the members of Gelao Society, characteristics of their activities, and measures strengthened by the government of Qing Dynasty against Gelao Society, such as the Bao-jia system and house number plate registration were recorded. It confirmed the original relationship between Gelao Society and another two organizations "Sanhehui" and "Sandianhui" in Hong Group as well as a hearsay that Taiping Army had sent fellows of Hong Group into Hunan Army and then developed the organization of Gelao Society in it. It presented the activities, characteristics, and influences of Gelao Society before its massive uprising in the lower reaches of Yangtze River in Anhui Province in 1891.
