Sustainble Development of Integrative Education in Hong Kong: An Inquiry with Complementary Observation on the Changing Role of Special Schools

The implementation of integrative education has quietly changed the ecology of schooling in Hong Kong. Integrative education,an educational idea and associated practices that emerged from western societies, has attained worldwide currency with the support of international development agencies. Integrative education is built on the concepts of human rights and equality. It emphasizes respect for differences. As an approach to education,it is easily understood but difficult to implement. This paper is an attempt to elucidate the basic concepts of integrative education, to identify factors that affect its operation, and to discuss problems in its implementation. By reviewing international and local research findings and developmental experiences,it aims to provide insights into the sustainable development of integrative education. This paper argues that the search for humanly constructed commonalities among natureendowed differences will be the main challenge of integrative education in the years to come.
