Abstract: | This article undertakes to describe the general situation of women in the USSR with regards to higher education, by insisting particularly on the fact that equality in this regard can only be achieved if the surrounding general network of cultural values, social norms and attitudes supports major female access to higher education. Drawing on available statistics, the author reviews preferred fields of studies and examines women's position in higher education, management and teaching.
