乞大是契丹的另一种音译，在这里指称中国。《老乞大》是古代朝鲜的一个汉语会话教科书。《老乞大》正文全部是汉字。在正文下加以朝鲜文注音和释义便成为《老乞大谚解》。中外研究古代汉语语言和古代朝鲜语语言的学者早已注意到这部书，而在史学界似乎还不太注意到它。其实《老乞大》生动记录了中国古代社会生活的一些侧面，留下了不少形象性的资料，从历史学或古代民俗学的角度加以考察，对了解中国古代社会面貌将不无裨益。
