英语习语的“不定性”会产生出许多临时变体,这给国内学习者带来极大的学习困难;同时英语习语浓厚的文化色彩与其语义上的隐喻性又是造成学习难度的另一大因素。文章提出英汉词典对英语习语文化信息处理时应正确关注:对应词中的文化色彩、例证与例证翻译中的文化味及文化背景的注释。

Flexible Use of English Idioms and the Lexicographical Treatment of English Idioms in English-Chinese Dictionaries

Institutionalization is one of the features of English idioms, which allows certain degree of transformation, and people often transform them ad hoc on the moment of impulse-this accounts for the great learning difficulty for Chinese learners. Idioms are the reflector of national character. The strong English nationality reflected in English idioms and the semantic opacity characterizing them makes them more difficult to master. But a good knowledge of cultural background of English idioms may ensure good understanding and proper use. English-Chinese dictionaries are supposed to help users with good understanding and proper use of English idioms and their variants through adequate provision and reasonable treatment of cultural background of the English-speaking world.
